Connecting Google Classroom

Updated September 23, 2026

Connecting Google Classroom lets TeachHero add your enrolled students to your Google Classroom courses and pull their grades back into your gradebook. Roster syncing is additive — TeachHero only ever adds or invites students, and never removes anyone from a Google course.

Note: The Google Classroom integration is included in every plan. See Plans & Pricing.

What to set up in Google Workspace first

The connection is authorized against your school's Google domain, so make sure these are in place on the Google side before you connect.

  1. Google Workspace for Education. Your school needs a Google Workspace for Education domain — the free edition works. Personal @gmail.com accounts can't be used, because managed Classroom courses and rosters live under your organization's domain.
  2. A Google Workspace administrator to connect. The Google account you authorize with grants TeachHero access to Classroom for your whole domain, so have a Workspace administrator make the connection.
  3. Classroom and API access turned on. In the Google Admin console, confirm that Google Classroom is on for your organization and that API access is allowed. If your organization restricts third-party apps (under Security → Access and data control → API controls), make sure TeachHero is allowed to access the Classroom permissions it requests — otherwise authorizing will be blocked.
  4. Google accounts for teachers and students. Everyone who should appear in a Google course needs an account in your Workspace domain.
  5. Matching email addresses. TeachHero matches students to their Google accounts by email address, so each student's email in TeachHero must be the same as their Google Workspace email. A student with no email — or an email that doesn't match a Google account — can't be added to the course.

Connect Google Classroom

  1. In TeachHero, click Settings in the sidebar, then the Integrations tab.
  2. On the Google Classroom card, click Connect (or open the Google Classroom page and click Connect Google account).
  3. Sign in with your Google Workspace administrator account and click Allow to grant the requested permissions.

You return to TeachHero showing "Connected to Google Classroom", and the card shows the connected admin email.

Open the Google Classroom page (click Manage on the card). Every TeachHero class is listed. For each class you want to sync, either:

  • Click Create course to create a brand-new Google Classroom course for it, or
  • Click Link existing and choose a course that already exists in Google Classroom.

A class only syncs once it's linked to a Google course.

Sync rosters and grades

  • Click Sync now — on a single class, or on the whole account from the page header — to push rosters and pull grades.
  • Every enrolled student who isn't already on the Google roster is added, or invited if a direct add isn't allowed. Matching is by email.
  • Grades from Google Classroom are pulled back into your TeachHero gradebook.
  • The table shows when each class last had its roster pushed and grades pulled, along with a count of any failures.

Troubleshooting

  • A student didn't sync. The usual cause is a missing or mismatched email. Add or correct the student's email in TeachHero so it matches their Google Workspace account, then sync again.
  • Authorizing was blocked. Your Admin console is likely restricting third-party apps. Allow TeachHero under Security → Access and data control → API controls, then reconnect.
  • Click Unlink on a class to stop syncing just that class.
  • Click Disconnect in the page header to stop all roster and grade syncing.

Note: Unlinking or disconnecting never removes anyone from Google Classroom.
