Assignments are the graded type of classwork. Unlike lessons, they're assigned to specific students, can have a deadline, and are graded with points. Assigned students see them in the student portal, where they can submit their work.
Note: Assignments are included in every plan. See Plans & Pricing.
Create an assignment
- Go to Classes and click the class. It opens on the Classwork tab.
- Click New.
- Under Type of content, choose Assignment.
- Enter a Title.
- If the class uses a grading system, pick a Grade category.
- Enter the maximum Points students can earn (a whole number).
- Leave Automatically assign to students checked to assign it to everyone (see below), or uncheck it to hand-pick students.
- Click Create.
The assignment appears on the Classwork tab. Click it to add instructions and attachments. Remember to Publish it when it's ready: new classwork starts as a draft that students can't see. When you publish, the assigned students and their parents get an email about it.
Set a deadline and other settings
- Open the assignment from the Classwork tab.
- Open the actions menu and choose Assignment settings.
- Set Due (in your school's time zone), and adjust Title, Points, Grade category, Automatically assign to students, or Assignment is graded as needed.
- Click Save changes.
Note: If the class has a grading system and you leave Grade category empty, the assignment doesn't count toward the final grade. Changing an assignment's points or category recalculates your students' class grades.
Assign automatically to all students
When Automatically assign to students is checked, the assignment is given to every enrolled student — and to any new student who joins the class later. The assignment page shows this as Assigned to all students.
Assign to specific students
- Open the assignment and click the Student work tab.
- Click Add students.
- In the Assign to students window, check each student to assign.
- Click Assign.
Under Assigned students, the tab shows how many of the class's enrolled students are assigned (for example "12 of 15 students"). Students assigned to a published assignment are notified by email.
The Student work tab also has the grading tools: points, statuses, View student work, and Return to student. See Grading Assignments.
Unassign a student
- On the Student work tab, open the actions menu on the student's row.
- Choose Unassign.
- Click Unassign to confirm.
To unassign several students at once, check their rows and choose Unassign from the bulk actions.
Warning: Unassigning removes the student's work and grade for this assignment, and their class grade is recalculated without it.
